Niagara Falls weather — month by month

Real temperatures, the mist factor, and what to actually pack. For live current conditions, check Environment Canada or the NWS.

The mist factor

Whatever the city forecast says, the area within 200 m of the Horseshoe Falls is 2–3°F cooler, much more humid, and constantly spraying water. Plan as if it's drizzling, even on a clear day.

What to pack — by season

Summer (Jun – Aug)

  • Waterproof shoes or sandals (boat tour soaks them)
  • An extra t-shirt + microfibre towel for after Maid of the Mist / Cave of the Winds
  • Hat + sunscreen — shade is limited at the main viewpoints
  • Light rain shell for the mist near Table Rock

Spring & Fall (Mar – May, Sep – Nov)

  • Layers — temperature swings 30°F day-to-day are normal
  • Waterproof shell + an inner fleece
  • Closed shoes; mornings can be near freezing in March and November
  • Compact umbrella as backup

Winter (Dec – Feb)

  • Insulated boots with grip — railings and walkways ice over from the mist
  • Hat, gloves, scarf — wind off the gorge is brutal
  • Heavy parka, not a city coat — cuts the wind
  • Sunglasses for sun on ice/snow

FAQ

What is the weather like at Niagara Falls right now?

For real-time current conditions, check Environment Canada (Niagara Falls, ON) or the National Weather Service (Niagara Falls, NY). The two cities are 1 km apart and have nearly identical weather. The falls themselves are typically 2-3°F (1-2°C) cooler than the surrounding city due to the constant mist.

What should I wear at Niagara Falls?

Year-round: waterproof shoes (Table Rock and Prospect Point get drenched by mist), a windbreaker or rain shell, and one extra warm layer beyond what the city forecast suggests. Summer: hat, sunscreen, and an extra t-shirt for after the boat tour. Winter: insulated boots, hat, gloves, and a heavy parka — wind off the gorge cuts through everything else.

Does it rain a lot at Niagara Falls?

Niagara Falls gets about 36 inches (914 mm) of precipitation per year — moderate. Summer brings afternoon thunderstorms; spring and fall are the rainiest in terms of full days of rain. The mist from the falls makes everything near Table Rock and Prospect Point feel rainy regardless of forecast — bring a rain layer even on sunny days if you plan to walk to the brink.

Is the weather different on the US side vs the Canada side?

No — the two sides are 1 km apart across the river and have identical temperature, precipitation, and wind. The only meaningful difference is the wind direction at certain viewpoints: Table Rock (Canada) catches more spray when wind is from the southwest; Prospect Point (USA) catches more from the northwest. Otherwise plan for the same conditions on either side.

When is the best weather to visit Niagara Falls?

Mid-June and early September are the sweet spot — warm enough for the boat tour, cool enough for walking, and the long daylight covers everything you need to do in a day. Late September has the cleanest, driest air and lighter crowds. See our best-time-to-visit page for crowd-vs-weather trade-offs by month.

How does the falls' mist affect the weather?

The constant spray from the Horseshoe Falls creates a microclimate within ~200 meters of the brink. Temperatures are 2-3°F cooler, humidity is much higher, and the mist falls as a fine drizzle even on sunny days. In winter this freezes onto everything — railings, walkways, your eyebrows. The mist plume is visible from 25 km away on clear days.
